George Washington Mitchell

My grandfather was George Washington Mitchell, born in Lima, Ohio sometime before 1900. He ran away from home at age 13, and I know very little of his life until he married my grandmother Cathryn Stewart Mitchell sometime in the early 1920's.

I know he worked at ATT and helped develop the rotary dial phone. As a reward, I suppose, he was give the job of running the ATT office in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where my mom, Mickey Sloss, grew up.

They lived in a hacienda on a coffee plantation outside of town, and I have a photo album of pictures taken both there and in Sao Paolo, it was given to George on his retirement.

When they returned to the US, they bought a large house in Ann Arbor near campus on Division St. I spent my early years in the apartment in the basement of this house, it became an international boarding house, all the rooms on the 3rd floor were rented out. After George's death in the early 50's, Grandma ran the house until retiring to Florida, where she live for another 25 years.
